The following 6 criteria are essential
There is a lot of confusion surrounding our field. I want to
give you 6 criteria or elements you absolutely, positively must
have in any solution you obtain:
One: If you're new to the coaching world, then you'll
have to be careful about all the people who are selling you
their "brand" of consulting. That's right, most coaching today
is nothing more than personal consulting that has been relabeled
with the "management fad" of the year--coaching. Don't get me
wrong, we need personal consulting, but if you're really looking
to take your professional career to the top, you'll need more
than consulting to get there!
Two: Most professionals today have grown up in the
old paradigm of service: they go to school, whether it be
college or "hard-knocks;" they attain a degree of success; they
don't like working for the "man" so they start a professional
consulting/coaching practice; they get clients. Now, the

understand the true shift that occurs when you resist "diving
into problem-solving" with your client...to hold the space for
your client to explore, discover and move to new perspectives as
they examine the "real" issues that have created their dilemmas.

Five: In order to succeed in the business of
coaching, you have to have more than knowledge! You've got to
create your own developmental path. You've got to do your own

Coaching
is the how of leadership and learning if it is grounded in
developmental theory, otherwise it is just a form of consulting--not

Coaching can be done in thousands of ways and will be

Developmentalism involves learning in all three "spaces:"
